Tape History:

I also want to keep you up-to-date as to the progress of my conversions for these '77 analog masters I have to the digital domain.  I have almost a complete set of CD's made up for most of my masters, so I don't need to keep using them as they are getting old and deteriorating rapidly. Besides, they leave a residue on my cassette decks heads.  I have to clean my heads every time I play just one tape.

1st a little of the process I've been going through to do said conversions. I'm working with "Cool Edit96","GoldWave" and others to get it to my computer as well as edit the "wav" files and then burn to CD. I then do a optical (digital) connection recording, from my CD player to my DAT deck or straight from my computer to my DAT deck with the digital I/O on my soundcard.

So what did I do you ask? The specs were:

5/1/77

(Panasonic AM/FM Stereo 'boom box like' w/condenser mics) -> CM (Cassette Masters) -> my computer* -> CD or DAT @ 44.1 kHz

*For ONLY the ending of Samson, 25:47 filler on CD2 & 20:10 filler on CD3 as follows:

1) > My computer using "CoolEdit96".

2) "CoolEdit96" noise reduction, just to remove some of the hiss & a little background noise, (after "Get Noise Profile from Selection") -

Noise Reduction Level = 6
FTP size = 8192
Number of statistical snapshots in profile = 96
Precision Factor = 10
Smoothing Amount = 1
Transition With = 0 db

3) In "GoldWave" using "time warp" to slow down the fast** tape as follows:

Under - New Speed or Length
Speed (only) = 0.930

**batteries must have been low, Jerry & company sounded a touch like the "Chipmonks" on my masters.

4) I then normalized, lowered and raised the volume where needed so the waveform was more uniform. In "CoolEdit96" I used the settings:

Normalize to = 95%
Normalize L/R Equally = check marked
DC Bias Adjust = check marked & set to 0%

5) And finally they still needed more noise reduction, (too much hiss on the test CDs), so I used "CoolEdit96" again:

Noise Reduction Level = 4
FTP size = 8192
Number of statistical snapshots in profile = 96
Precision Factor = 10
Smoothing Amount = 1
Transition With = 0 db

For the remainder: I used a DAT provided to me by: Robert "Blake" Gilpin.

Af:Cm>R>Sbm>D: which is loge 1st row AUD center>Cm>Blake Reel (maxell ??? @ 3.75ips) > PCM R500 w/SBM > DAT @ 48 kHz > my computer* > DAT @ 44.1 kHz or CDRs. Originally taped by Barry Glassberg w/sony ecm 99p's > tc 152 sd deck.

*See below

To my computer from Sony PCM R300 DAT coaxial outputs > "Fiji" soundcard "S/PDIF" inputs @ 48 kHz > edited as follows:

1) > My computer using "CoolEdit96".

2) In "GoldWave" using "echo" as follows:

Delay(s) = 0.100
Volume (%) = 10
Reverb = unchecked

3) "GoldWave" equalizer:

60Hz = 3
150Hz = 4
400Hz = 4
1000Hz = 4
2400Hz = 3
6000Hz = 1
15kHz = 0

4) I then normalized, lowered and raised the volume where needed so the waveform was more uniform. In "GoldWave" I used the settings:

Maximize = 0.700

5) And finally I then converted 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz in "CoolEdit96".

5/28/77

It took me about 48 hours to get just right, but 5/28 is done. I used Richard Plumb's DAT via Jim Wise masters [thanks guys :-)], except for 2nd set "Samson" through "Drums", where I used my master. On 5/28/77 I was standing real close to the speakers, starting about 3 minutes into "Samson" & stayed their until NFA. The 1st 3 min. of "Samson" is passable. Rather then break up the song with Richard's then splice in mine after the 1st 3 min., I decided to use my master straight through to the end of "Drums".

Richard's DAT has an inferior "Terrapin", so mine is an upgrade. My master is on par with Jim's, for ONLY the brief segment where I was standing close to the speakers, but a little brighter on the middle & high end but not quite as low on that end. Anyway, it makes for a nice complete show with 'vg' sound quality wise.

For all of Set 1 & from "NFA" to the end of Set 2:

Jim Wise used: 2 Sony 54P mics w/ Sennheiser 441 blend mic > Nakamichi 550 cassette deck FOB > reel @ 3 3/4 ips > DAT @ 48kHz > my computer > DAT @ 44.1kHz or CD.

For Set 2, "Samson" through "Drums":

(Panasonic AM/FM Stereo 'boom box like' w/condenser mics) -> CM (Cassette Masters) -> my computer* -> CD or DAT @ 44.1kHz

*See below.

1) Sony 3-head cassette deck (TC-K615S) > 10 band equalizer, "eq". The "eq" settings:

           31Hz    62Hz   125Hz   250Hz   500Hz   1kHz    2kHz   4kHz   8kHz   16kHz
Left:    13db    13db    13db     13db      13db    13db   12db   11db   10db     9db
Right: 13db    13db     13db     13db      13db    12db   10db   10db   10db     9db

2)  > My computer using "CoolEdit96".

3)  "CoolEdit96" noise reduction, just to remove some of the hiss, (after "Get Noise Profile from Selection").

Noise Reduction Level = 4
FTP size = 8192
Number of statistical snapshots in profile = 96
Precision Factor = 10
Smoothing Amount = 1
Transition With = 0 db

4) "GoldWave" equalizer (a touch of bass boost):

60Hz = 4
150Hz = 4
400Hz = 3

5/8/77 Filler

I spent today redoing 5/28/77 CDs for our next batch. I also put on the last CD of 5/28, a COMPLETE 5/8/77 Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication from a crisp BBD, plus my master 30 sec. AUD for the missing section. It's beautiful!

Douger should like this? Hey Doug, you'll have to sign up for batch #2 to get this one, :).

Also, I put together a NEW "5/8/77 'Good Bear' Collage". It's just over 20 minutes long & fits nicely on the last disc of 5/28 too!

The "Collage" is highlights of 5/8/77 done my way. The process:

1) Sony 3-head cassette deck (TC-K615S) > 10 band equalizer, "eq". The "eq" settings:

           31Hz    62Hz   125Hz   250Hz   500Hz   1kHz    2kHz   4kHz   8kHz   16kHz
Left:    13db    13db    13db     13db      13db    13db   12db   11db   10db     9db
Right: 13db    13db     13db     13db      13db    12db   10db   10db   10db     9db

2)  > My computer using "CoolEdit96".

3)  "CoolEdit96" noise reduction, just to remove some of the hiss, (after "Get Noise Profile from Selection").

Noise Reduction Level = 4
FTP size = 8192
Number of statistical snapshots in profile = 96
Precision Factor = 10
Smoothing Amount = 1
Transition With = 0 db

4) "GoldWave" equalizer (a touch of treble boost):

1000Hz = 1
2400Hz = 4
6000Hz = 4
15kHz = 3

MAKING INTO DIGITAL MEDIA

After the above I did the following to make the CDR seeds:

1) Used "CDwav" to split the tracks.
2) Made the burn at 2x's speed using "EZ CD Creator".

For the DAT's:

1) 2 "wav" files on my computer, 1 per set, for each show. Total size about 1.5gb for each show.
2) Play the "wav" files from a playlist using "Turtle Beach's Audio Station 2" software > Coaxial (digital) connection from my computer to my "Sony PCM-R300" DAT deck. Or I used the "optical" connections from the back of my CD & DAT decks.
