If anybody is looking for HQ sbd sounding tapes, these are NOT those tapes. However, most are rare & generally what circulates in aud's are generations from these masters or low generation tapes. I'm one of those people that prefer SOME 'energetic' aud's over sbd's & these IMHO are 'energetic'.

As I move away from analog cassettes & snail trading to the digital domain of CDs & DATs & 'ETREEs', I'll be posting shows via the web on a regular basis.

To see my list of proposed music I'd like to ETREE & Tree.

If anybody has anything else that rarely circulates LMK & I'll add it to the list.

From David Sorochty with Teddy "Good Bear" additions:

The tape purports to be -

Veterans Hall, Columbus Ohio 11-22-68

master aud reels - Michael's uncle's friend who taped the show
1st gen cassette - Michael's uncle's tape
2nd gen cassette - Michael's tape
3rd gen cassette - Dave Sorochty's tape (got it from Michael) and given to Teddy "Good Bear"

Michael's Info: Email & snail addy can be provided upon request & Michael's approval.

After the last song Phil says: "We'll be out their sometime time this weekend, really, you see to it - You see to it that we have a place to play out their".

They did play in Ohio two more times that weekend. At the Garcia vs. Garcia trial a couple of years ago Phil had to testify and he spoke about this very show! He was asked to date a letter that Jerry had written to Mountain Girl where he mentions a concert in Athens Ohio.

Phil was absolutely positive the letter was from 1968 because they only played in Athens once - on 11-23-68. That was because so many students from Ohio U in Athens came to this show in Columbus on 11-22-68 (a long drive - about 1 1/2 or so) that the band decided to go to Athens and put on a free show for them!

At most a few seconds is missing from the beginnings of Dark Star and Cryptical. There is a tape flip in Lovelight on the 3rd generation cassette that was neatly spliced together on the CDs by 'Good Bear'.

Hey everyone:

I just wanted to let you know about a new un circulated audience tape from 1968 I've gotten a hold of!

A while back I got an email from a guy who said that back in 1968 his uncle and another guy taped the 11-22-68 Columbus Ohio Dead show from the audience. He said that the song list wasn't in DeadBase and he didn't think anyone else had it. His uncle has had a copy he got from the friend of his who recorded it and this guy had a copy of his uncle's tape. He said something else that was unusual - that is was with Mickey only on drums since Billy was sick. Very interesting indeed! I said to send me a copy. :-)

I listened to it several times and was virtually convinced that it was something new. It has New Potato Caboose on it and there aren't many New Potato shows - I was familiar with many and it wasn't any of them. It wasn't any others listed in the back of DeadBase #10 either as far as I could tell.

I wanted to get it transferred to CD, but I was kind of paranoid that I'd be wrong about it being something new - so I sent the tape and a bunch of blank CDRs to Teddy to do the transfer and cassette copies to a couple of other tapers (including Dwight Holmes and Jay Strauss ) to let them have a listen and let me know what they thought about it. They are also convinced that it is something new and previously un circulated!

Teddy has just gotten the tape put on CD and made several sets of copies as well as uploading it to a binaries site on the net. My original tape was hissssy and didn't have much bass to it at all, and Teddy said he tried his best to edit it to make it as good as possible I haven't even gotten a set of the CDs back to listen to how they came out though.

If you like '68-'69 GD, and if you're not averse to less-than-stellar-audience recordings, you'll love this one. David is come into a real gem here. (Let me clarify: for '68 this is a pretty nice aud. actually. There's a substantial amount of hiss, but it happens to be at a frequency that the standard Dolby button takes care of most of it without affecting any of the music (I *rarely* use that trick, but for this tape it works perfectly). I'm sure Teddy's machinations will alleviate even that need.)

The band is rockin' for this one (cf. proximate shows like 10-20 and 11-1-68: this one is a much hotter show, and with a dynamite setlist.). The few gaps in the music are unobtrusive, really. This stands as a true "missing link" Dark Star -- being the only live version we have between 11-1-68 and 1-26-69 -- the latter being brutally cut at less than 8 minutes. It's more open and expansive than even 10-12 & 10-13. Garcia's licks in St Stephen are much more fluid, like '69, rather than the somewhat stiff and angular riffs of '68. The Morning Dew rocks, Schoolgirl rolls, and the New Potato is one hellluva Caboose on the evening. The Lovelight is very worthy, and the Other One ain't no slouch. (The only thing missing is a righteours rendition of Rosemary!) The mix in the sound is such that you can really appreciate the band - audience interplay, without it interfering with the music.

The *real* kicker is, of course, the absent Bill. Mickey does his very very best to carry the load; and you can't say he's not up to the task, but you get the feeling it's all he can do to keep it going. If you don't already, you'll really appreciate Bill's contribution after hearing this one :-)

And interesting to note that the very next day was TC's first "official" show. I've always wondered how he just happened to be in Athens, Ohio. Does _Between Rock and a Hard Place_ shed any light on that?

Enjoy it folks!

No question about it. A cornerstone DS setting the table nicely for February's Star smorgasbord. The DS times out at around 11 minutes which fits it right in there with late 68. 8/22 is 12 minutes, 9/2 is @ 13 minutes, 11/1 is 12 minutes.

By 2/2/69 it was @ 15 -16 minutes and 2/27 is @ 23 minutes, etc.

amen. Aside from his missing 100 mph centrifugal force bending hairpin turns, his accenting rolls like the marching intro to the william tell overture and subsequent climb into the eleven stratosphere was missed also. Just before they turn the corner into the actual Eleven jam ... as Garcia noodles those 4 notes over and over .. waiting for everyone to get together before heading off into it .. Mickey jumps the gun, Phil follows him, but Garcia ain't ready yet .. so he remains on those 4 notes for another several rounds before blasting out of the gate with a shot of sustain ... and off they go. fun stuff.

nice find Dave!

I'm done editing 11/22/68 from the David Sorochty 3rd generation cassette. I was working with one WAV file about 900 mb big. This is what I did:

1) Sony 3-head TCk615s cassette > Turtle Bch. "Fiji" soundcard (flat) > CoolEdit Pro @ 44.1kHz with volume peaks at -6db.

2) CoolEdit function "Hiss Reduction" (with no noticeable high end loss):

Drag Points = 14
Reset = Hi (straight line) -50db
Noise Floor Adjust = -6db
FFT size = 4096
Precision Factor = 5
Transition Width = 10db
Spectral Decay Rate = 65%
Reduce Hiss By = 17db

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

3) CoolEdit function "Stereo Expand/Pan":

200% straight line.

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

4) CoolEdit function "Amplify":

Various lowering & increasing of volume throughout the 10 steps listed here. The biggest was lowering the volume after "Stereo Expand/Pan" & "Graphic EQ" by about -6 db.

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

5) CoolEdit function "Graphic EQ":

30 band EQ with full bass boost as a smooth WAV curve gradually slopping to flat.

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

6) CoolEdit function "Hiss Reduction" again (with no noticeable high end loss):

Drag Points = 14
Reset = Hi (straight line) -50db
Noise Floor Adjust = -12db
FFT size = 4096
Precision Factor = 5
Transition Width = 10db
Spectral Decay Rate = 65%
Reduce Hiss By = 15db

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

7) Fixed "Morning Dew" muffled sound somewhat, at about the :30 sec. - 1:10 mark:

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

30 band EQ on "Dew" with treble boost as a smooth WAV curve gradually slopping from flat to high.

8) Dwight Holmes previously mentioned that the pitch & speed was off in Morning Dew from D to D#. Actually Dwight was right about this, the pitch & speed were off about 8%. I used the following on:

CD1 - "resample" by about 8% (which basically slows everything down including lowering the pitch & adds time).
Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!
CD2 - "resample" by about 4% (which basically slows everything down including lowering the pitch & adds time).
Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

To my untrained non-musicians ear, it now sounds right. FFO Dwight!

9) To bring up the vocals I gave all a simple midrange boost as the below chart indicates:

Click Here To View The "CoolEdit Pro" Function Graphic!!

10) Fixed "AWBYGN" annoying hum. However, at about the 1st :30 seconds it's still muffled & has some noise:

It sounds so much better now. The original had so much hiss I thought I would have a hard time getting rid of w/o losing the high end.

Schoolgirl Finished WAV

I'm glad I got "CoolEdit Pro". I could listen & isolate just the noise & hiss only I was removing, before removing it. I made sure not to remove any of the music, including cymbals.
